The new Converse: Step out in Superga, this summer's hottest footwear

For a few years now, Converse has pretty much had a monopoly on canvas footwear.

But this spring Superga has made a comeback - their 2750 model with a thick white sole has been worn by everyone from Kelly Brook to Katie Holmes.

The Italian tennis pump has been around since 1925 so has long been a staple in the wardrobe of chic Italian ladies in dress-down mode.

And the plimsoles have been around for so long they can be worked into almost any casual look.

Alexa Chung wears hers with a cute Sixties-style sun dress, Fearne Cotton likes to pair her pink versions with Nineties style baggy jeans and an oversized blazer, while Kelly Brook wears her white pumps with on trend yellow jeans.

The shoes' versatility is further exaggerated by the range of colours they now come in.

During Superga's last revival, in the Nineties, fashion dictated that you should only wear the white or navy versions, and only if you were channeling the androgynous look.

This time around, even the stripy ones are acceptable, and pairing the trainers with cute sun-dresses is encouraged.

The only stipulation is that you must forgo socks if wearing the £40 shoes with a dress, shorts or cropped trousers.

Until you switch over to the fur-lined versions this winter - those you're allowed to wear with tights.
