Drug-addled singer Pete Doherty was sentenced to six months behind bars yesterday for possession of crack cocaine.

The 32-year-old, who has made an astonishing 14 court appearances in the past, was charged with possession of the class A drug during the police investigation into the death of heiress Robyn Whitehead.

The Babyshambles frontman and his fellow musician Peter Wolfe were both arrested over the death but, though Wolfe admitted to supplying Miss Whitehead with crack cocaine, a postmortem examination found that she had died from heroin poisoning.

Doherty, who was due to perform in Glasgow last night, has served jail time twice before but never for longer than two months.
Yesterday the judge, Recorder David Radford, told the singer: "You have an appalling record of committing offences of the same kind as I have to deal with in this case.

"It cannot be right that time and time again, the fact that you are a talented musician, and the fact that you provide what you do in terms of work for others, is justification for not sending you to prison."
