Natural beauty: Actress Penelope Cruz, pictured in the latest issue of Vogue, broke down in tears in the accompanying interview as she discussed her baby son Leonardo

Playing a swashbuckling pirate opposite Johnny Depp would be a tall order for any woman, let alone one who is carrying her first child. But for Penelope Cruz, the knowledge that she was expecting a boy while filming Pirates of the Caribbean last year only improved her performance.

The actress, 37, who gave birth to baby Leonardo in January, is said by the movies's director, Rob Marshall, to have 'loved that there was a boy in her.'

She told the latest issue of Vogue: 'I was pregnant and a pirate. A beautiful experience.'

She broke down in tears in the interview as she tried to explain how her son had changed her life.

Stunned by her own emotion, she said: 'This has never happened to me... This is really funny. I’m sorry. It’s unexpected.'

She told the magazine: 'From the first second, you feel so much love. It is a revolutionary experience. That’s the best way I can describe it. It transforms you completely, in a second.

'Nature is very wise and gives you nine months to prepare, but in that moment—when you see that face, you are transformed forever.

'Even if you have heard from all your friends and family, "This is what’s going to happen," until it happens to you, it’s hard to understand in your soul.'
