I'm glad Amazon rolled this out before Apple in the sense that I hope it pushes Apple to roll out a cloud subscription that handily beats Amazon's offering.

and do you think Apple will likely be competitive and innovative with such an offering?

i do hope so, but the record with mobme isn't exactly stellar.

I wouldn't be surprised if a MediaMac had the same form factor as the Mac Mini. However, a Media Mac needs 3.5'' HD to keep the price resonable.

I don't get the point of this article. I mean, isn't it common knowledge that Apple is going to use the Merom processors in it's computers?

BRLawyer... you talk about market share and other quantitative data as if they were the last and only delimiting factor. Obviously YOU do NOT use a tablet. Allow me to enlighten you about the benefits you do not know about or care to investigate:

    1. Tablets allow me to lecture while writing and projecting simultaenously, thereby allowing me to retain a written record of what I actually keep.
    2. Because I am involved in about 10 educational and professional committees, I use the MS OneNote program to create virtual file folders. Sure, you can do this with Mac journal type programs, but I am able to write within each folder in my own handwriting, which not only increases my memory retention, but is far more polite when you are in the mixed company of those with more power and money than you.
    3. Because I am able to keep handwritten notes, I am able to reduce the amount of paper I carry with me. It is both tiresome and counterproductive to retain endless amounts of paper files.
    4. I am able to receive assignments, faculty reports, articles, journal papers, etc., and ink them digitally and then return the marked document WITHOUT printing out and hauling around what amounts to about a vertical foot of paper. I challenge anyone to mark up and edit a document faster using a keyboard than they can with a "pen" type arrangement.
    5. In science and engineering fields where you often have mix of graphical, formulaic, and written data, it is far superior to write out notes of mixed symbols than to type them on a keyboard. The keyboard is faster argument ONLY applies to situations where you do not have to interpret and draw diagrams.

The argument that tablets are only useful for artists is totally without merit: explain to me then why the Deans of both engineering and science at my university use tablets.

I must stress that too many people harp on the need for the OS to interpret handwriting perfectly. What many people discover after using a tablet is that often you leave your notes handwritten: they are yours, filed away for your use, and for your reference.

Is the tablet perfect? No. Is it for everyone? No. Is it cheaper than a notebook? No. However, your market share - not enough people use or need one - argument is without substance. Since you bring up "there are cheaper notebooks" point, why don't we just use this oft-tiresome rant against Apple itself? Many have in the past. At less than, what, maybe 10% of the market - even if it is higher - why should Apple exist at all? Anything less than, say, 20% is pretty low market share - why bother with Apple? Furthermore, there are many, many models of hardware comparable to Apple's, and at far lower price. Why then should Apple products even exist?

I do not know why so many are so resistant to the tablet idea from Mac. You don't like it - don't buy one. Accept that there are others who would benefit tremendously from such a product, even if it is a small market segment.

I didn't get to your comment before I posted mine; sorry about that. You're absolutely right. I could see artists, students, professors, scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and countless other professionals who would be elated to have a Mac-based tablet. In fact, the only things I can see it not being useful for is Word and Excel. Even writers could use it to markup their edits using standard proofreading symbols. Much faster than other methods, I'd think; plus much more environmentally friendly because it would alleviate the need for printing out so many hard copies of everything.

    http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com)

Smarthouse.com.au claims (http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Automation/Display_Panels?Article=/Automation/Display%20Panels/H9R6N2M2) that Apple has a full working prototype of a Mac tablet PC within their labs with plans for a 2007 launch.

According to sources in Taiwan, the targets for this unreleased Mac tablet are expected to be home and education markets rather than the enterprise market.

The Mac tablet has been designed to handle third party applications such as home automation software that will allow users to control lighting, audio, entertainment devices and security feeds. It also acts as a full blown PC has wireless linking for a new generation of Wireless Hi Fi speakers that are currently being tested by Apple.

The Intel-based Tablet Mac would also offer a docking station to provide HDMI output to the appropriate screen. Beyond using the technology documented in Apple's recent patent applications for touch-screen/tablet Macs, Apple is reportedly licensing at least three patents from 3rd party companies.

This is not the first time that there have been rumors about a Mac tablet. In fact, rumors of a Mac tablet culminated in early 2003 with significant evidence that a Mac tablet project was in the works at that time. At the time, one description of the tablet at the time was as follows:

A device that superficially resembles a large iPod with an 8-inch diagonal screen, lacks a keyboard, packs USB and FireWire ports, and runs Mac OS X along with a variety of multimedia goodies.

The tablet, of course, never saw the light of day... though its unclear why Apple never released the tablet (if it did indeed exist).

I Doubt Merom Supplies Are Off Allocation Yet It's Unlikely Apple Can Get All They Need yet. Therefore MacBook will get Merom later and mini last.

Indeed. The big question is when they can update the MB?

Santa Rosa is currently expected no earlier than April. Assuming the MB's can't get Merom til, say, December, is it worth going C2D for ~4 months? (Assuming Santa Rosa is on-time -- which, to be fair, Intel's been pretty good at lately).

If the current enclosure is viable for Merom, then probably, but any late? Difficult to say.

The mini's probably less of a risk in that sense, and doesn't use CPUs in the same speed-range as the notebook systems, so it wouldn't surprise me to see it move up to C2D at the same time as the MB. I agree before the MB seems unlike for commercial reasons.

I beg to differ. I've even heard stock analysts anticipating the release of the iPhone. It's not a matter if Apple is going to release it, its a matter of when.

Nor, methinks this iPhone shall ever happen. What would Apple gain in becoming a cell phone provider? Its a nasty market with no concensus between camps.

    Sorry, its vaporware.

I'm not sure....it could be the next great product to be unveiled @ WWDC, but it seems a little soon and I just can't really see Apple making a phone. Sorry. While I'm sure if it is true, it'd be a cool phone, but it just seems like one of those rumours that comes up occasionally and then goes away, just like the Tablet Mac. On the other hand, the Marklar rumours were true, so I don't know. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

    Yeah tell me about it.

How much does it take to break a Verizon contract again...?

It's $175, and I think it'd be worth it. I never get more than maybe three bars, and let's just forget their international plans. I think I'm going to switch to T-Mobile in a few weeks. My Verizon phone was $1.50 a minute internationally and it didn't even work in Rome and my aunt's T-Mobile phone I borrowed for my trip to Singapore was $0.99/min. and worked so well.

It looks so much worse. :(

I like it, it's subtle enough. They didn't go overboard with the metaphor like they did with Address Book, which I find to be atrocious.

Also, new filesystem for the Love of God… please! License something or develop your own… HFS+ is old and dead.

They're working on it, I remember reading somewhere about a job posting for FS engineers to develop a new FS. They were going to use ZFS, but the licensing fell through.

I can't go so far as to say the answer is 288 as I don't think it is correct to take / at face value. I don't think that is what the author intended.

PEBCAK. (see earlier in the thread).

The answer of what was typed is 288. If the entity between the keyboard and chair meant something else, they should have typed something else.

The problem isn't with the expression it's with the wetware.

Simple...it's NOT gonna happen anytime soon.

The Tablet market is a sad failure, as it represents a tech in search of a purpose...nobody needs or wants it.

Hint? Think Origami, one among too many MS failures...just like the Zune in the next months.

Apple will NOT enter the fabled Tablet market again, as the focus of demand is on notebooks, nothing else...yet another borndead rumor.

God I'm so sick of people making this excuse. So just because no one else has found the right formula it means that Apple can't right?

Have you ever used a tablet before? If not you are missing out. The experience feels much more personal for some reason. It feels like a platform that is begging for Apple to do something with it.

PS- Let me guess you were one of those people screeching that Apple would NEVER go Intel. Would never release an iPod with photo capabilities or video. Would never allow Windows to run on a Mac.

Lol. I totally forgot about the origami. What a flop!

Its running a slightly modified version of Windows. What did you expect? Anyone who comes out with a tablet needs to do more then slap their OS on it. there needs to be a fundimental shift in HOW you interact with the OS.

It'd be cool for Apple to start building a small, fast SSD "drive" (memory chips) into every Mac, that would be dedicated to the core System, and only the System. Small enough to be inexpensive, large enough to easily accommodate current and future System files, fast enough to be faster than any current hard drive. Make the drive say 32 GB, with two partitions. One partition holds the installed System, the other partition is just scratch space for downloaded and uninstalled software, including the System itself. Possibly this partition contains some minimal boot system in order to re-download and install the package from the app store in case the installation gets botched.

I think that has been the idea in the recent disclosures. In my opinion, with the next iMac refresh/redesign, Apple will incorporate a small SSD for system tasks. But I don't think Apple will waste a partition of the expensive and intelligent SSD for just an OS Install.

SSD caching is going to be very important in the future so wasting 4 or 8 gigs of space for no reason sounds a bit stupid to be honest.

But on the same track, Apple could well include the OS in a partition on the HDD itself. Why not? Instead of giving 995.5 GB (out of TB) to users after the OS install, give 990GB. For a user buying more than 500GB of HDD or HDD+SSD combined, it doesn't make much a difference; also make it optional.

I think I did mention this in one of my previous posts that Apple should keep the OS in the HDD itself so there's no need of a disc in most situations.

    I need:
    8 Internal Bays.
    More PCIe Slots.
    Thunderbolt.
    Keep Dual Optical Bays.
    More Ram Slots.
Built in Fibre Channel (This is a stretch)
That should be a MacPro. What you guys want is that magic headless iMac. I want more, not less.
Working in Video I need the most horsepower possible. 32 Cores would be nice.

At home I can live with my iMac, but editing on it is a pain. A MiniMacPro might work there, but it will still cost 2k and people will bitch.
For work I can justify spending $8,000 on a high powered PRO machine.

Exacly, these are workstations if you want something small with limited expandability buy an imac.

whats better sophos or kaspersky for mac?
    Neither.
Will this scan for windows viri too?
Most scan only for Windows threats, since there are no viruses in the wild that run on current Mac OS X. Some will scan for outdated Mac viruses and trojans, but those are unnecessary, as long as the user exercises common sense in where they get software.

Kaspersky …is a lot heavier on system resources.

With Sophos, users may find heaviness in different ways.

The default number of WorkerThreads seems to make the system unusable for some users of the current version of Sophos. That's heaviness of one sort.

A higher number of WorkerThreads, for which there's no GUI, will use resources in a different way. That's heaviness of a different sort.

A system that's consistently usable is a must, so for as long as there's uncertainty around http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Unable-to-complete-login-after-reboot/m-p/1027#M599 I should recommend approaching SAV with caution, and with readiness to work around things from the command line.
