Ok, here's a nightmare for you just to illustrate the kind of headaches we're talking about. First, let me start by saying that I upgraded my Cube from OS 9.2.2 to OS X 10.1 all the way through 10.2.4 with no problems, and that I recently installed a Pioneer A05 DVD-R/RW in my Quicksilver tower without so much as a hiccup. So on to my Windows XP hell...

Here's the deal. I was running a Dell with Windows 98 SE, all updates and service packs installed. The system specs were as follows: 1.2 GHz P4, 1 GB RDRAM, 80 GB HD, DVD ROM (all stock) and a Geforce 3 Ti and Sony CDRW (upgrades). Everything was hunky dory, but I was wondering what this new Microsoft OS was about. A buddy of mine is an IT admin and was just RAVING about the thing, so I figured I'd give it a try. His company bought XP on a corporate license (without the hardware registration and activation, and with one token serial for the entire company) so he gave me a copy just to try out. I appreciatively installed it on my machine which well outpaced the recommended minimum config, and got to work. The install crashed twice, but I managed to get past that.

Once I had successfully installed, I realized that everything was running well. I went to the prefs pane to take care of that Fisher-Price My First Interface (TM), and everything was fantastic. It really was more stable, though not so much so that I never crashed at all. In fact, I still crashed once a day, but that was so much of an improvement over 98 that I didn't complain. The only real problem I had for the better part of a month was that every time something went south the machine asked me if I wished to send an error report to Microsoft. Ugh.

So things are great for around 3 weeks when all of the sudden my CDR just stops working. Seriously, just like that. I wake up, boot, and BOOM! It's gone. It's not in My Computer, and I can't use it at all. It's visible in the BIOS, and it's obviously drawing power, but XP just decided that it wasn't welcome anymore. I got in touch with Sony after I was unable to find an XP driver on their site, and they told me that XP didn't actually need drivers. They recommended trying the 2000 Pro driver. That didn't work either, so I called Microsoft. They recommended a reformat. To this day they have no idea what went wrong. No service pack has been able to fix this, and it cost me countless hours (on top of those already detailed) to remove the HD, install it as a slave on a 2000 machine (because it was NTFS formatted) and recover my data to 65 individual CDs. What a nightmare.

My experience may be atypical, but from talking to friends and reading the horror stories here I've come to doubt it. Simply put, XP really is the best OS Microsoft has ever produced (except for 2000 Pro, but we're quibbling). That being said, being a higher grade piece of ***** doesn't count for much. It's still a piece of ***** after all, and it's still got more buggy code than it does functional code. Since I switched to the Mac my life has been simpler. Period. End of story. Even when using OS 9 I never experienced horrors like this. OS X has been a breeze since 10.1 on 3 year old hardware. When was the last time someone could say that about ANY Microsoft OS? Seriously, the only hardware problems I've had at all on my Mac were directly related to bad memory, and that's not the fault of the OS. That's why we bitch and moan about Windows, my friend. That's why. :)

The one in Texas the comtroller (GOP at the time) even toll scumbag Perry that if you cut property tax that for it would come back and be a problem in 2011. He called it. He told them in 2011 the budget would come up short and it was just worse than he said it was because of the tanking.

You mean "she?" We've had women comptrollers for over a decade now.

The underperforming post-2006 state franchise tax takes the lion's share of the burden here (as called out in the article). It simply isn't compensating for the reduction that was based on it.

But... that decrease in school taxes has been partially offset by the appraisal districts raising home values since it went into effect. Both the rates and home values have increased in my district since the initial drop. (By 2009 the rate x value equaled my 2005 amount.)

Sure, it's screwed up, but don't believe Perry's claims that he reduced school taxes as much as he says. That's giving him too much credit.

    http://crosslandteam.com/blog/2006/04/20/texas-property-tax-reform-wheres-the-beef/

Thanks for reminding me though... I need to file my franchise taxes.
    :(

    Thanks balamw,
I got an answer from the VLC forums. To do this you need to go into the preferences for VLC and select "all"rather than "basic" for the preferences, then select the "Stream Output" heading and uncheck "Enable video stream output".
I also changed the encapsulation method to "Raw" rather than "Quicktime" because for some reason it otherwise wouldn't import the mp3 files into itunes (I'm guessing it's something to do with ID3 tags). this then gives me file sizes around 6mb depending on the bit rate used and song length.

In summary to get the audio from a DVD using VLC change the above preference settings then under the "Open Disc", choose "DVD" and "No DVD Menus" then change the MRL to the chapter of the DVD you want audio from e.g. 1:3 is chapter 3, then select "Streaming/Saving" and go to the "Settings". then in the file space name the file you want to create including .mp3 extension, then choose Raw encapsulation, mp3 transcoding and whatever bit rate and channels you want.

In similar fashion I believe you can use VLC to grab audio mp3 from flash .flv files

Only $20 savings for each iPad, when you buy 10. That is no better than the education discount on iMacs, when you buy them 1 at a time.

We use RFID chips in ID card for public transportation here in the Netherlands. I can't say it's the most efficient system but I can see the potential of having one set up in a device you carry with you all the time like an iPhone.
Interesting to hear you say that -- I use the Oyster RFID card for public transport here in London, and it's incredibly efficient. Compared to paper tickets, it's faster to use, faster to pay for, and much more durable.

Would be great to have this built into my iPhone...

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oyster_card#Usage_statistics to see just how massively popular RFID technology is here. Only 4% of Tube users use cash, the rest use RFID for their journeys!

Can't believe aperture doesn't support more RAW types yet.

Until it supports more/all of the raw types, it will never be a real 'pro' application imho

Which cameras in particular. It already supports all the serious Pro cameras if you ignore the very recently announced Canon and Nikon amature DSLRs.

KOOL, my alarm I set for an event from iCal just went off, that was neat! it also just went off on my iPod too! how cool is that?

    anyways

    >The Mhz numbers looked nice on p4

most of my die hard PC friends who know the PC also know about the mhz myth, and understand the Mac is great at some things....& can hold its on against a quicker pentium processor,

however, I remember buying my B&W G3, when apple could actually tout it as the fastest machine in the world.

man we have fallen behind so damn fast, until I see 2. something ghz with ddr ram and a bus speed from here to amazing, I will not be buying a new mac.

I use to say I'll wait till dual 1.6 ghz, but I've decided to make apple work for the money I have to work for

anyone else tired of being left behind? I realize our OS is fantastic, the machines (design) and the way they work are amazing (especially with compatibility)

have you tried adding the NAS to your login items via system preferences > accounts > login items ?

this will ensure the NAS mounts automatically when you boot your Mac.

    I'm a Gmail fan.. woot. 2.7+GB

So much for free .Mac in '07. ON TO .Mac '08!

You can get .Mac for free right now!. All you have to do is work at (or know someone who works at) an Authorized Apple Reseller (eg: Micro Center, Circuit City, etc) they have access to the Apple Sales Training website. If you (or they) complete the .Mac training course, you get a year of .Mac (full version) for free! I've never paid for .Mac & never will.

I don't believe anything is really going to change. Al Queda is still alive, we are still spending 1,000,000 to 1 going broke trying to snuff out world wide terrorism, probably creating as many terrorists along the way as we destroy. :(

As I said in the other thread, I glad he is gone, he was a threat to peaceful existence as long as he was alive, but my gut feeling is that nothing is resolved.

The iMac 27" is my favorite.. none of the all-in-ones it's compared to are even the same size on that chart. Even if you build a computer with the same equipment it's more:
    ---------------------------------------------------------
$1100+ for the 27" IPS monitor from Dell (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&sku=224-8284&redirect=1)
$150-250 for the processor (i5 2390(I think)) according to Intel (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=52211)
$120+ for the graphics card (desktop version, not sure about the mobile) according to Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102940&cm_re=Radeon_6770-_-14-102-940-_-Product)
Anywhere from $100 to $500+ for the tower and necessary equipment ( just depends on what tower, cooling etc. you purchase)
$180 for the Windows license :P according to Newegg Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116716)
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
$1550 at the minimum if you do it yourself, probably more if you buy it from a manufacturer. Slightly more expensive than the $1500 iMac, and not everything comes in a nice looking package. Plus the hours you get to spend putting it together.

I did the math for at least that one Microsoft, stick to making Windows 8 as awesome as Windows 7 instead of making terrible ads like this.

Umm do not use retail cost of the OS. You need to use the OEM cost. That is 100 bucks.

It was what I was expecting to be honest - a slightly smaller 360. Not crazy small, just a little bit.

Built in 802.11n is a nice touch, seeing as MS charge insane money for their WiFi adapters, and they have been playing catch up to the PS3 (especially the Slims) for built in features.

Stuff I don't like? Gloss! Sony realised glossy didn't work that well and went to matte, but MS have done the opposite. Still stuck with a custom HDD, which will no doubt be overpriced for replacements.

    Will I get one?
Probably not. I've got a recent FF XIII Super Elite 360, so this offers me very little - literally built in WiFi vs. my adapter, and power/noise. Not worth the money.

Well, it was pretty great while it lasted, but we all kind of saw this coming I think. At least they're replacing these channels with equal alternatives... Comedy Central = Jewelry Television and FX = Home Shopping Network, right? Points for effort at least... After years of bending over its customers, at least TW did do something cool; if only for a couple weeks...

The difference here is Samsung settled. With $1billion at stake, Apple will likely fight this to the end. And with countersuits on the line, this will get ugly.

Companies almost always settle. If it got that far, Apple would too.

Greedy or not, if Apple and RIM are part of some patent infringement they have to pay up.

A judge at the ITC already said they don't infringe.

the patent was granted in 1997 and basically covers previewing the picture on the little LCD screen.

No it doesn't. It covers a particular way of producing different sets of image data, one for the sensor and one for the LCD screen, using specific types of color filtering, etc. The patent pre-supposes that previewing the picture on the LCD screen already existed.

    http://www.google.com/finance?q=kodak

Kodak's stock is up 11.5% today. (as a result of this news?)

Unlikely - all that happens if the earlier judge is overruled is that more proceedings happen. It's not like anything that happens today means an immediate payout.

I would really like to read the patent. Yes, there are some very generic patents out there; some are upheld others are not. Going based on only what I have heard; a 1997 patent for a preview of a picture may not hold water.

See above. Patent doesn't claim the idea of using a preview screen.
