A face in the life of Kate Moss: The coarsening effect of drink, drugs and non-stop partying

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Serene, poised and with the hint of a shy smile — Kate Moss was barely recognisable when the Mail published pictures of her yesterday as a sweet 17-year-old posing for a bridal magazine.

Twenty years on, and the wear and tear of her notorious lifestyle has taken its toll.

Here, we look back at Kate’s 20-year career and chart the decline of a once-great beauty.

2011: Looking 37 going on 47, Kate is now busy preparing for her July wedding to Jamie Hince.

How she is dressed on the big day will be a surprise, but one thing is certain: she’ll be almost unrecognisable from the fresh-faced 17-year-old that she was 20 years ago when she posed in that early shoot for Brides magazine.

Kate Moss, the model bride before her lifestyle took its toll

By JENNA GOOD

That was then: Kate Moss posing for Brides magazine at the age of 17

Smiling demurely for the camera, this is Kate Moss posing as a virginal bride aged just 17.

Twenty years on, the supermodel may be seeking to recapture the look for her imminent wedding, but the chances of her being anywhere near as fresh-faced and dewy-eyed seem pretty remote.

For years of partying, hard drinking and drug abuse have clearly taken their toll on the 37-year-old.

Party girl: Hard-drinking and drug abuse have taken their toll on her looks

The pictures, from a 1991 feature in Brides magazine, show the model when she was still a teenager on the brink of stardom.

Those were the days before she left Croydon, south London, to embrace a lifestyle that encapsulated sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll – and plenty of booze and cigarettes to boot.

Innocent: The shoot, completed early in her career, demonstrates just how much Kate's lifestyle has taken its toll

For the photoshoot, Miss Moss modelled that year’s best bridal fashions, all of which were priced at under £500.

However, the pictures merely illustrate the impact her hedonistic lifestyle – including the infamous Cocaine Kate allegations in 2005 – has had on her looks in the intervening years.

Indeed, tumbling out of a friend’s house in west London on Tuesday evening, the model appeared typically well-refreshed.

Miss Moss and Jamie Hince, guitarist in band The Kills, are to marry on July 2 in a church close to her Oxfordshire home.

• See the full shoot in the July/August issue of Brides, magazine on sale now.

Kate Moss returns to her hometown of Croydon by helicopter for new Rimmel ad

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Going back to her roots: Supermodel Kate Moss returned to her hometown of Croydon to film an advert for Rimmel make-up on the roof of the Whitgift shopping centre

Since being discovered by a model scout aged 14, Kate Moss has left her hometown of Croydon firmly in her past.

But the supermodel decided to go back to her roots for the new Rimmel make-up advert as she was airlifted into the South London suburb via helicopter.

The 37-year-old blonde was back on stunning form in a red mini dress, patent peep-toe heels and lashings of red lipstick as she shot the commercial on the roof of Croydon's famous Whitgift shopping centre.

Dramatic setting: The supermodel shows off her fantastic legs in a red mini dress and heels as she skips over to the waiting helicopter

The catwalk queen was seen striding across the roof of the Whitgift Centre's multi-storey car park and jumping into a slick black chopper before being lifted over the concrete jungle that is Croydon town centre.

Although the shoot took place at sunrise, Moss was seen earlier on street level near the Allders department store with her hair in rollers and enjoying two of her vices - white wine and a cigarette.

During the promo, there was heavy security on site and the entire top floor of the car park had to be cleared from excited fans.

How do you close this thing? Moss climbs into the helicopter and struggles to get the door shut

Many onlookers misheard and thought Prince William's new wife Kate Middleton, aka Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was in the helicopter.

The model's return to Croydon comes six months after she complained the area had become 'rough' since her childhood.

She told Stylist magazine: 'It’s so rough. My dad was in the pub the other day and somebody got shot.'

Red alert: Moss previously complained Croydon had become 'rough' since she left it in the Nineties

Moss grew up in Addiscombe - just a mile down the road from the Whitgift Centre - and honed her famous style by shopping in second-hand stores while growing up.

When she was dating Hollywood star Johnny Depp in the Nineties, she apparently took him back to the suburb for a tour and brought him to Surrey Street Market and Po Na Na's nightclub.

Of course, Croydon's nightlife has changed a lot since Moss was growing up - perhaps the Rehab bar or Tiger Tiger may not be quite to her tastes these days.
